Activities: Hiking

Summit Trekkers

Thursdays | July – September

The Trekkers do strenuous hikes (slightly slower than the Mountain Goats), usually 8-10 miles with 1,500-2000+ elevation gain. They hike mostly (not always) on trails. Formerly known as the “Trail Goats”, the group originated to provide an alternative to Mountain Goat hikes. For more information email Susan (Sue) Johnson at suesue.paris@gmail.com.

Turtles & Snails

Thursdays | Year Round

The “Turtles” hike all year round on Thursday mornings. We switch to snowshoes and yaktrax in winter, rec paths during mud season and easy hikes all summer. Our hikes are usually 3 to 5 miles. Sometimes we have some “Snails” who hike at a slower pace and not as far. We want our group to be accessible to all so come and enjoy our beautiful mountains.

Summit Older Bushwhackers (SOBs)

Tuesdays, 8:30 AM  | June – Mid October

Summit Older Bushwhackers (SOBs) do intermediate backcountry trail hikes on Tuesdays, mostly in Summit County. These typically range from 4 – 7 miles and with 400 – 1500 ft of elevation gain. They are led by volunteer trip leaders, usually a different leader each week. We meet from June through mid October, weather permitting. We usually leave the car-pool location at 8:30 and are back between 12 and (rarely) 2 pm.  For more information, call Jim Fleshman at 281-507-1059 or email rjftex@gmail.com.

Mountain Goats

Wednesdays | Mid May – September

The Mountain Goats are Summit 50+’s most challenging hiking group. Our mid-season hikes are typically 8-12+ miles with 3000-4000+’ elevation gain. They usually contain a significant off-trail component with some Class 2+ scrambling, moving at a brisk pace. Our members make our hikes a priority in their summer plans because they love hiking, and they love hiking with our group. We hike every Wednesday from mid-May through the end of September. If this sounds like what you are up for doing on a regular basis with a group, please email summitmountaingoats@gmail.com for further information and a possible try-out hike.
