Volunteering with Summit 50 Plus

Summit 50 Plus provides many ways for members and non-members of all ages to give back through community service.

Front Desk Volunteers

Help the Community Center by volunteering at the Front Desk to answer phones, sign up new members and work on other small clerical projects. The available shifts are as follows on weekdays:

  • 8AM-10AM
  • 10AM-12PM
  • 1PM-3PM
  • 3PM-5PM

If you’d like to help, please call the Front Desk at 970-668-2940.  This is a year-round volunteer opportunity.

Volunteer Companion

Summit 50 Plus, in partnership with The Alpine Area on Aging, is sponsoring a new Volunteer Companion program.

The program is looking for 50 plus folks in need of companionship 2-4 hours a week. Trained volunteers will be matched with a 50 plus person wanting a companion. The participants and AAA will be responsible for training and supervising the volunteers. There will be an extensive process for interviewing the family and volunteers. Volunteers just need to be over 18. Care recipients must be over 60.

Volunteering with Summit Seniors

The companions are not Certified Nurse Assistants or nurses. They are volunteers helping 50 plus folks. They will read to them, go for walks, play games etc. They are volunteer friends giving the usual caregiver a break or offering companionship to someone living alone.

This program is already in place in many Colorado towns. Boulder has a well-established program and Summit County’s program will be modeled after theirs.

Volunteers can sign up for the first training at the Senior Center. There is no cost to attend but volunteers are expected to sign up for one or two; 2 hour shifts a week, vacations and part time residence being expected etc.

Interested participants and volunteers can call Sandy Bainbridge at (970) 584-0311 to get more information or ask questions.

This is a good opportunity to pay it forward! As we live longer these kinds of programs will be needed and appreciated more!

Meals on Wheels

The mission of Mountain Meals on Wheels is to provide healthy and nutritious meals to adults of any age who are homebound and unable to prepare their own meals. Meals are prepared in a commercial kitchen located at the Summit County Community Center in Frisco. This program is heavily reliant on volunteer drivers, who deliver meals Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays around noon.

Drivers are required to have their own vehicle and be able to pass a criminal background check. If you are interested in delivering meals, or to sign up and receive more information, please email seniors@summitcountyco.gov, or call (970) 668-2940. This is a year-round volunteer opportunity.
